Tfl oyster card and travelcards

I want to purchase a 7 day travel card on my oyster for the 11th of October but today when I try to purchase it online it says I have to activate it today and 3 days after why is this
also if I purchase a new oyster card with the exact same travel card on it do I have to activate it today or if I order and have it delivered by post can I activate it on the day
