Student Loan age 50

Good Morning
Is there any truth in a student being taken out before 1998 being written off at age 50?

I ask this as i am currently in the process of selling my house and the solicitor has noticed that the student loans company have put a charge on my property? This happened some years ago after i was made redundant, i was never notified of this and it is causing some problems.

I have tried to contact them but they say Drydens fairfax have put it there who i have been unable to get through to so far

Thanks
