For clarity, I'm not one of those jumping to the conclusion that the OP's partner got screwed, I merely pointed out that the possibility is just as likely as the OP dodging a bullet.

And if the OP had decided to marry his partner then splitting the marital assets wouldn't have been a bullet.

For all we know the OP's partner accumulated millions in cash while the OP did all the childraising and housework in between his shifts on the force, which they will now keep for themselves (subject to child maintenance).
    Absolutely, that's why I said...
Nothing but wild speculation without more information..

I find it highly unlikely that a serving police officer did all the childcare and ran the household. Even if the other partner worked.

And if they have children together, they should have gotten married. Statistically, children of parents who are married do better in life, regardless of family income.

    He could be part time.

    No argument there.
  • Should have got married, really. What business is that of anybody other than them.
  • Indeed, this thread is mostly unpleasant speculation about the lives of people we know nothing about.
  • That is the main downside I find on this forum

This is an open forum. Numerous people have read the thread who aren't the OP or any of the respondents (902 views currently after only 18 replies).

As in any open forum, threads go off on tangents, tangents which may be irrelevant to the OP as they are spilt milk, but could be relevant to the hundreds of other readers.

It's not helpful to the OP (or their partner) but it may be helpful to someone else as an illustration of the numerous risks of intertwining your finances with someone without marriage.
