I have some us dollars I would like to exchange into sterling. Any recommendations as to where to get the most for my money - best exchange rate & minimal commission.

Many thanks.

  • It’s going to be ridiculous to change them back. Your best bet is trying to find someone who is going on holiday and sell to them at the current exchange rate!

If you are close enough to Newry the Buttercrane Bureau will buy them at a rate of 1.285, which is not bad.

If you are not in a rush, wait it out until the rate is better.

That's about 74p to the dollar. On Friday the local banks were offering about 77p to the dollar.

I think the £ is fairly weak against the dollar at the moment, and would expect the £ to improve if there is any glimmer of a possibility of improvement in the Brexit options.

If the £ improves, you will get less for your dollars, so my recommendation would be to get rid now.

Commission free means diddly squat if the rate is awful.

Bureau de Change in the Buttercrane would have given you £119.01 for $150

Clearly not much use if you live more than a few miles from Newry, but demonstrates the differences available.
