The decorator says a light switch 'fell off' now the light won't work??

Sorry! Yes, that's how it's wired.
Then you probably have a wire that is broken. There might be enough slack to pull a bit more cable down so that it can be stripped back. If not, the whole length from switch to light fitting will need to be replaced.Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.0 -
Here you would never find red & black or brown & blue in a switch drop. We rightly use twin brown (and previously twin red).0

Presume you have checked the bulb in the ceiling rose is actually good!0

Presume you have checked that the glue from the wall paper hasnt spilled onto the wiring and so blocking the connection being made.
Stripping the wire back further will give you a answer but definitly get a electrician if your not comfortable doing it.0 -
At this point it would surely be easier to get an electrician out to test the fittings and wires. They will be able to diagnose the problem quickly and fix it. Assuming the wire doesn't need replacing, it should be a simple call-out fee. If it does need replacing you're going to need the electrician anyway.0

I don't have a meter to check the power, I wish I still did. . .
The light was on, they unscrewed the switch and it 'fell off' and the light went out. I know that they had the light on, I took them a cup of tea an hour before.
I always switch off the whole of ring before I do anything (and check that it's really off)...
How do you check if you don't have a meter or mains tester?
Just because all the lights go off doesn't mean that there isn't power on one of those two wires.
If you have reverse polarity or some other fault, then switching the ring off may still result in a wire being live.
It might be time to get an electrician in.A man walked into a car showroom.

A further thought....The rest of the lights on the upstairs lighting ring all work..
It is possible that this light is not on the same lighting circuit as the rest of the upstairs lights.
In our 2004 built house the lighting circuits are split front of house and back of house, not downstairs and upstairs.A man walked into a car showroom.
