O/S Daily Thursday 12th September 2019

This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Morning everyone

Hugs to those that want/need them, those who are poorly and those who are looking after a poorly person x

Happy birthday to those with a birthday x

Now getting light, dry underfoot and much warmer than it has been, got a line of washing dry yesterday even though it was dull and cloudy and not very warm when I hung it out yesterday morning. I will be trying to get as much line dried as possible over the next few days - forecast is not too bad.

DH up and gone to work stupid stupid early, DS1 now getting ready for work and I'm showered, dressed and enjoying my first cuppa and porridge whilst on here. DS2 settled and ok.

Dinner last night was breaded chicken portion, skinny chips and beans - I had planned something else but forgot to get the meat out to defrost. I did remember last night though, so tonight we're having HM chicken and mushroom pie, mash, veg and gravy.

I'm now on days' off, so will be tackling the "to do" list - I will be heading into town first thing to visit the building society and the bank and I have a couple of other places to go to whilst I'm out. I also need to crack on with the washing, drying, ironing and housework. I will potter along and do what's needed at my own pace.

Keep safe and well x

  • Good Morning

Nothing to report on the baby front!

    Thanks for the start nmlc.

I'm gradually getting through the washing from the weekend, it seems never ending. Must do some ironing tonight as that basket is filling up too!

Good to see some old friends back. tru - my friend in Oz has had to put her dog on a sort of prozac to stop her being aggressive to other dogs.
    Any news on respite Gers?

Off for a swim in a minute then another manic day at work. We have another office staff member who is very eager, not at all like the young useless chap so that's making a difference.

Have a happy Thursday, take care. XX
  • Good morning, and thanks for starting off NMLC.

It seems quite a nice morning here, 15 degrees, and almost full daylight.
I haven't posted for a few days, I've been reading along though

Nice to see you back Tru, and you Holly,

It's been the usual daily round here. Today we're hiring the carpet cleaning machine from Morries, and are going to clean the 3 piece suite and the carpets in the two main rooms downstairs. We were going to ask DD to borrow theirs, but they took it to the caravan and I think it's still there.

I think you had a culinary disaster earlier in the week Gers - so have I. I was given a few cooking apples from DD, and thought I would make an apple scone from an old recipe book of my mothers - it was bl**dy awful. Don't know what happened to the apple but you couldn't taste it, and it was very doughy, so I put it back in the oven for another few mins but it was still horrible, so I chucked it out.

Anyway we've got some rhubarb gin on the go, and yesterday I went into Durham and bought some damsons to make damson gin, using cheap gin from Li*l. There's a nice greengrocers near the bus station, and their fruit and veg always looks lovely, I got some leeks as well and made a vat of leek and potato soup. That's now portioned and in the freezer.

Hope everyone has a good day, take care folks xx
  • Good 6, quick post from me as I need to get in the shower and ready for the journey to the dentist, after I've been to the dental ceramicist. Two hour appointment today, 3 crowns to be replaced and some root canal work. Not looking forward to this.

    Will update later.

Lovely to see a post from Holly

    Have good days all.

Looks to be quite a nice day here, its been a bit milder the last few evenings so we have not had a fire.

Off to work and young lads Thursday and always a noisy day I have a meeting mid morning which lasts about an hour so that will break the day up.

Something with mince for dinner I might do a chilli as we have not had that for a while, OH will have rice and I will have a baked sweet potato, there is salad for me as well, need to start using a few bits up now.

I need to do a shop for toiletries on Saturday so will gat any milk etc for our return then dd will come the day before we are due back and take it out of the freezer for us.

Right better get on have good days all xx

    Morning all.

Autumn is slowly spreading its chilly fingers towards us. Heating has come on this morning.

This morning has DM's cleaner, think she'll be missing for six weeks after this as she's having an operation on her foot, she has her premed appointment tomorrow.

Yesterday I had a telephone appointment with DM's GP. She asked about respite care and told me to chivvy social services as I haven't heard for over a month. I'll do that today. I also asked about why DM wasn't able to put on weight - she explained that DM was probably losing muscle mass. Makes sense.

There's a pile of clothes to go to a CS and I really want to tackle the freezer. There's so much really old stuff in there. Now that the fridge is sparkling I discovered that the smell was from a Camembert so that's triple wrapped. :rotfl:

AOD - hope the dental treatment isn't too bad.

Thoughts to all the missing and a happy Thursday to all.

    Morning :hello:

I was thinking about wildlife after ancientofdays mentioned her woodpecker the other day. We have quite a variety of birds here, but there's also foxes living near the railway track. At night, they venture across the school field and come through the tall hedge opposite my house, then wander around the roads at night like they own the place, lol. I wake up at silly times during the night so I go to the front bedroom window and look out for a few minutes – I often see a fox looking for food or just sat there, having a wash :D There are some squirrels living in the hedge too, I never see them when I'm out and about but I see them out of the bedroom window sometimes. That little bedroom is well on it's way to becoming my craft space/office and I really don't see myself getting much work done :D

camelot I read a lot about doggy prozac but had many behaviour tips from 'experts' – you know the type, they've owned one dog that was well behaved and have never met a nervous dog before but they know it all! Funny how these 'experts' all seemed to contradict each other, lol. And they all seemed to be anti-meds. Don't get me wrong, I've had suggestions from some lovely people too, and some of their tips worked. One lovely man trains gundogs and their behaviour is just perfect, he said even he wouldn't be able to fix this, we'd need more than a trainer and joked about a psychologist, lol. I looked into experts but none seemed to fit our situation. I mentioned prozac to the vet when Scamp went for his booster, he said he was willing to try it but please speak to this behaviourist first. She was amazing and taught me loads of stuff. I think if she hadn't worked out for us, Scamp would be on some sort of medication now.
Our walk yesterday was perfect, Scampi was an angel. Today may be the complete opposite, I'll know how he's going to behave by how he is when I put his lead on. A slow walk in a circle then sitting in front of me and waiting while I clip the collar and lead on means he's going to be lovely. Having to remind him a couple of times to come here and sit, then him standing up after the collar is on but before the lead is on usually means he's a bit nervous and will probably hate everything, lol. At least I know whether I can just amble about or have to spot any moving thing within 50 yards and practice my ninja moves :D

Mum is coming for coffee this morning, she usually brings treats with her. I'm hoping for jaffa cakes today :D I have to order a couple of things online and log into the HMRC website. I only have to do this particular job 12 times per year and the work only takes about three minutes but it's such a faff and I hate doing it. First things first – put the washing on and run the dyson round.

Morning all, hope all is well.Good luck today AOD.Quick one from me-I'm off into town,I haven't been out all week apart from dogwalks.
Csarina your talk yesterday of your tin cupboard sparked an idea in me and I have now moved a lot of tins into the front room into a tall narrow cupboard at the side of the chimney.I can see them better and the kitchen cupboards are easier without so much in,so thanks!
I love comps, sorry you were feeling sad about your mum and house, its hard.Rhubarb gin- I love it and have done elderberry gin and raspberry before, might get cracking again.
OOps better go,bus in 10. Have good days all x

  • Morning chums a quick head around the door before I go to DDs we share a gardener, and I want to make sure he cuts back her jasmine as its getting a bit out of hand. He's made a nice job as usual of my garden and its looking tidy and weed free after its break while I was away.

DGS Henry finishes his summer job tomorrow then he has three weeks before he goes off to Essex to start his Uni life. DGS Jack has two weeks before he goes back The house will seem very quiet with two more of the boys gone and only Mikey left .

Well - what a morning that was!

I phoned my SIL in Australia to wish her a happy birthday. She's bought a Tiny House and is busy kitting it out. It's on the land she bought earlier this year although away from the main house which she's letting her youngest son and family live in. I'm trying to persuade them to buy a miniature Highland cow!

No sooner had the cleaner arrived and started when the domicillary optician turned up. The receptionist had taken down my phone number incorrectly so they couldn't ring me. Anyway, that prompted DM to quickly get herself dressed and into the living room. He was a very nice chap and did all the required tests and then recommended new lenses in DM's reading glasses. The other main pair are Varifocal and not good for reading. Result.

As he was leaving the cleaner's husband arrived to collect her and the postie, I didn't know which way to turn! Anyway, I've eventually had some breakfast, a painkiller and a glass of water.
  • Hello all, am back and it wasn't too bad, especially no root canal. I have 3 temporary crowns and the anaesthetic wearing off, not especially painful.

However I'm very tired, possibly from sheer terror and pretending to be brave.
I was jumping to conclusions and one of them jumped back
