Crochet instructions

Hi,
This might not be the best place to post, but since you got a knitting thread her on the OS board I thought I try here first.

I've been given a great crochet pattern but find it hard to understand the instruction and it is supposed to be for beginners. I know there is a slight language barrier since I'm Swedish and I believe the pattern is American. Can anyone her help me translate the abbreviation's or know of a web address that might explain it to me.

Rnd 1: ch2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. (6 sc)
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around. (12 sc)

I'm guessing that sc=chain stitch but that as far as I got. The instructions shows no pictures to explain.

  • ch = chain stitch
sc = single crochet (UK double crochet)

That pattern's a bit confusing, with the word "around" - is it worked in the round?

It is a pattern to crochet a teddy bear. The bit i copied and pasted is for the head. But basically it is the same abbreviation used through out even on the arms, body and legs.

Perhaps I should just go back to making my scarfs and handbags :o

yes it is in the round. It should say something like 6sc in the second chain and then join with a sl st to the first sc that you made. You would then work two sts in each stitch around and then join again - unless they want you to crochet in a spiral all around. As you say it is for the head of the teddy bear you would be increasin for quite a few rounds to get a nice rounded shape - good luck. BTW very important to find out if these are american or english instructions as they are very different

  • If you can get hold of it second hand or from the library the Happy Hooker is a great instructional book for crochet and it explains the difference between american and british crochet instructions. In the meantime this website has a good explanation of stitches and patterns, its in american terms.

Brilliant the second link describes it better than any book I've got so far. Will check with the library for the Happy hooker as well :j

Can someone explain this to me please?
Feet (make 2): Chain 3, slip stitch into first ch to make a circle. Ch 1, 5 dc into ring, slip
stitch to join round. Next round, ch 1, dc into each of next 2 stitches, then 2 dc into next
stitch, dc into each of next 2 stitches, then 2 dc into next stitch. Join round and work 5
rounds. Then turn, ch 1, dc into next 4 stitches, then work back and forth in rows on
these 4 stitches for 6 rows. Then join the centre back with dc. Now dc all around the
opening for 4 rows. Fasten off.
