Deciding between local job at 60K or London job at 90K

  • Think of your health too, the air quality in London is horrible in most places, illegal in others. No point having extra cash while you wheeze your way through retirement.

    Your take home pay would rise by about £1500 per month, of which you'd have about £1000 less after paying for your commute. Is it worth losing 40 hours of your life a month for this and what would you do with the remaining extra money?

    Do you want to spend your weekday evenings out and about with colleagues or would you rather be with friends and family nearer home? When I worked in London it was handy in a way that I didn't live there - it was a good excuse for not spending £20-30 in the pub every evening, which would obviously add up very quickly, but instead doing so every so often on colleagues' birthdays etc...
  • Maximising annual pension contribution of £40k would leave you with almost out of HR tax band.
