Ticking the Subscribe box or not?

I'm sure this question must've been asked before, but I can't find anything so...
Do you think ticking the Subscribe box when entering competitions matters? I never tick it (unless I have to, in order to be able to enter the comp), as I don't want my inbox filled with newsletters and stuff. But I often wonder if you're actually spoiling your chances of winning by doing this (I know that's not supposed to happen, but who knows what goes on behind the scenes??
Just interested to know what others do. Thanks.

11 If you opt in or out of their mailing / 3rd party mailings, does it affect your chances?
I ALWAYS indicate a big fat 'no' to both of those, unless it is something that I'd really like to hear more about or a comp you enter by signing up for their newsletter.

It should make no difference to whether you are included in the comp or not, although some smaller companies may break the rules. I have to say I’ve been really lucky with wins & it seems to have made no difference whatsoever to my chances by always opting out where I can. It just means that I end up with less spam & on less junk mail lists.

If it was my competition I would pick a winner that has subscribed, but that's just me :) Who's ever gonna know.

Technically / Legally, it shouldn't affect your chances but in reality I'm sure it does, especially with smaller companies.

Hopefully, most comps are run fairly and it wouldn't make a difference, unless it's conditional on entering. However, a comp cheating host might deliberately choose a winner from those who haven't ticked for notifications.

Someone who has ticked for notifications is a potential future customer. A host might choose to give a free prize to an entrant who is less likely to buy one if they don't win.

Thanks to all who have answered. I did keep wondering if they would really choose someone who didn't opt in as a winner, which is why I posted the question. Just wondered what others do.

Sigh. Maybe I'll have to start subscribing...
  • To be honest I wouldn't do anything differently from what you are doing.
You're gonna get 100 emails per day on the off-chance that someone *might* only pick a winner who has subscribed, and even then you'll still be only 1 of say 100 people who chose to subscribe.

It's not worth it, if it's a prize you really want and think there might be low entries then Subscribe, otherwise I wouldn't bother.

I have won 100's of times when not subscribing - I suspect there is too much overthinking of what a (proper) promoter might do - rather like paid or free entry to ITV competitions etc where it makes no difference to them which entry method the winner uses - deliberately choosing a winner that has signed up over someone who has not just for the potential benefit of one person is not worth the possible fuss if they are found out particularly as it doesn't guarantee the promoter any gain.
