in Cutting tax
I have recently started working and have to subscribe/register with different professional bodies. This is compulsory and they are on the list on the inland revenue site.
Just wanted to ask - how do I go about getting my tax back for them as they are non tax deductible? (Sorry if its a stupid question)
Do i need to put it in writing? or is it ok to phone them up? And how do they calculate it into you tax allowance - does it just appear on the tax coding?
TIA

Probably best to do it in writing.
It will show up in your code. If you subscriptions are allowable, then if you pay £200 in subscriptions it will show as an allowance of 200 in your tax code.0 -

Yes it is just a case of writting to the local inland rev office. Thats how i did mine and within 4 weeks i had received a new coding notice to allow for the extra tax releif. You Can, If You Think You Can!0 -
Thank you - I'll write them a letter then!0

Just so you don't confuse the tax man, they are tax deductible, you want to claim them under Section 198 ICTA 1988.0 -
Dont' forget you will only get 22% (or 40% if you're a higher earner) of your subscriptions back from the tax man. Not the full amount.
You can claim releif on the last 6 years' subscriptions as well though, if you can prove you paid them.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
Can we just write a letter to the local IR office stating this or do we need to fill in a self-assessment/tax return form declaring all income/expenses? Reason I'm asking is because I heard that once you fill one of these up, you need to fill one up every year and i don't want to have the hassle of filling one up every year when i'm on a PAYE now but would like the professional subscriptions tax deductible.0

Don't worry, you won't need to do a tax return unless you've got complicated tax releif issues, like lots of business mileage for instance.
just write to the IR at your employer's tax office (on your Notice of Coding) and you will get the tax relief if you're entitled to it.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -

Sorry Telly Addict but I don't think it is under s198 ICTA 1988 any longer. Didn't ITEPA 2003 replace all of the employment sections of ICTA 1988.
I think the deductions under what was formerly s198 ICTA 1988 are now in Part V of ITEPA 2003.Everyone loves Magical Trevor.
