Postal Deregulation - What's the point?

So this morning my post dropped in (seems to arrive earlier on a saturday for some reason) I noticed that I had two items of mail - one from royal mail the other one allegedly delivered by TNT but in actual fact delivered by Royal Mail.
Is this what deregulation is going to bring us? One company negotiating the price, getting a fat percentage but actually just passing the mail onto Royal Mail to delivery (and collect in some cases). How does this benefit anyone except the middle company? It's not really benefiting the consumer, it's not like these companies are going to be interested in the wilds of Scotland or Northern Ireland.
If Royal Mail makes less money, there is less to invest, so then we will get a poorer service. I'm not against de-regulation if done properly but it appears in this case like all cases in the UK it is being done cack-handedly, so that only big business will benefit. Or maybe that is the point of everything.
