I agree with Sony it's a cross not an EX in the same way that it's a circle not a ZERO in the same way that they are shapes and not characters of the alphabet

Agreed, although it's more commonly referred to as an eX, and I have called it as such since PS2, the buttons are all symbols not letters. The eX button is an eX on (e)Xbox, as the other buttons are letters.
