Personally I think you have to be very careful with used laptops, as you never know how much use they have had and they do break down a lot.0

Have a look in the Techie Board as there is a long running Great Hunt thread at the top and other laptop threads running at the moment.

ideally, u want a pentium M and not a pentium 4. Pentium M is made for laptops from the ground up; is more efficient, uses less power (ie more battery life, less bulky laptop, less hot etc etc).
ebuyer have some good deals on new Acer laptops with Celeron M processors.. they have all the power of the Pentium M, but dont have as many power saving features built in. still, i have one and it does > 2hours on one charge of normal use. the Pentium M acer i also have does like 5 or 6 hours if its used lightly (ie, MS word etc)
try and get wireless lan built in too, as i'm sure even if u dont have a wLAN now u will find a use for it at some point, and be thankful of it.
if u can stretch to £611 + delivery, i'd check out quickfind #79595 (on ebuyer), awesome laptop (very similar to my Pentium M laptop, but better) its definately worth it. has almost everything u could want on a laptop.
if u look at the site, u can see that a slightly worse speced toshiba is going for £950.
and ive been very happy with the acer brand too, well built, no problems atall.0
