Required ID for Jobs (Passport, Driving License)

Due to not going on holiday for a while, I have an expired passport. We won't be going aware for the foreseeable future so I am rather reluctant to fork out £80+ for another one.
What alternatives are there for proof of ID for jobs and bank account applications?
I don't drive so don't have a driving license either. What is the cheapest, least hassle way of getting some ID that more and more places seem to be asking for now (Just applied for a Tesco job and they required a valid passport on the application!)

Employers can be prosecuted if they employ someone not entitled to work in the UK, hence checking eligibility.

Copy of a birth certificate, national insurance number, paid off mortgage account (see OP’s thread - though I believe there’s no bar to overseas ownership).Originally Posted by shortcrust

From tesco-careers.com
"What documents do I need to use for proof of right to work?
Please see the link for a list of acceptable documents that you can use:
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/right-to-work-checklist "
That list includes "A passport showing the holder, ... is a British citizen"
My bold - there are other options that specify "A current passport"0 -
Some employers do insist on a current passport, but there are other options as on the list above. Personally I've never understood the need for the passport to be current, except that I suppose a photo in a really old one might not match your current appearance.
A driving licence doesn't prove Right to Work, but does (if it's a photo licence) help with the photo id requirements.Signature removed for peace of mind0
