When people cant afford them they have to fall to the level people can afford
They still won't be able to get a mortgage though. Houses are already affordable for most of the country. Those people who can't buy and don't live in the south east can't buy because they can't get a mortgage. This is usually because they prefer to spend their money on other things like cars. Cars are set to become more expensive once they all have to be electric. When that happens people will take out even bigger car loans than they do now and so will still not be able to get a mortgage.
Houses have never been affordable for people who buy lots of things and who don't use public transport.0 -
1-6% variance. For 99% of people those amounts are neither here nor there.
Could, might, possibly, maybe .... it all amounts to nothing as people are buying a specific house in a specific road in a specific village/town and each transaction is dependent upon the circumstances/need of the individual sellers and buyers.0 -

That isn't true. Although if you think you can't afford a house but do those things, then it would help to stop. I could have saved a whole lot of money if I'd bought as soon as I could have. I didn't because I didn't think I could afford it, in hindsight I was wrong.
I eventually bought & I rarely use public transport.0 -
Another AG/RealElement47 sockpuppet? How many does the guy need?0

For crying out loud, do we really need another "Brexit will cause house prices to plummet" thread on here?
I am just amazed that there are so many people in this country who are celebrating it's coming collapse because they failed in life. There is no difference between this mentality and someone wanting a meteor to crash into Earth in order to re balance wealth distribution.
I am willing also to bet that the failures in life now will be in the same order on the food chain once we become poorer, it's amazing want envy does to some people.
It is amazing. The mere mention of house prices falling brings out the "I am considerably more wealthy/respectable/adult/successful than you" mentality in some people.
What about the young people and first time buyers? Weren't you one at one time?0 -

If house prices fall then lenders become stricter, there are only very few young people that it can help. The idea that everyone should be able to own a house is flawed in any society that uses money.
There are slight shifts where the cut off should be, but it's really hard to purposefully move that.0 -

I generally agree with your opinion about house ownership. Many Continental European countries such as Germany have relatively low house ownership and yet have strong economies.0 -

I do think more people could afford to buy if we didn't have the idea that poor people deserved to be poor because of some defect, therefore we should pay them as little money as possible.
I don't see that happening with the conservatives in power though.0 -

Yes I was one once.
I didn’t drink, smoke, have pets, the latest electronics, a nice car etc. And didn’t get the house I wanted straight away.
Most couples budgeting sensibly in most parts of the country could buy now. I’m not talking about the bottom 30% who have never bought.
No you can’t get a nice place in London/se and have a nice car.
A 6% drop isn’t going to make any difference even if it did happen.0 -
I think if it hits house prices, it will be due to a wider economic decline (so not a good thing). As it is, the need for housing is quite resilient, it will only drop so far0
