Hello to all. Could someone tell me if your National Insurance number is on your credit file report ?
Id be interested to know if it is and whether banks, lenders and other agencies link personal details from NI nos ?
Ive just had a letter from a DCA sent to my parents house regarding a student loan taken out more than 10 years ago. They seem to have acquired the debt from SLC. I did make a payment (I thought that would be the end of it as I was unemployed and made them an offer) to a DCA around 2001 but cant be sure of exact date and had heard nothing since from them.
Its for over 4k more than half of which is arrears. I dont want a CCJ against my name as I wanted to buy a house soon in a different part of the country. I have been living away from my parents address for 6 years but occasionally put it down for correspondence as I move about.
The letter seems to be designed to scare me by threatening CCJ and more.
Should I acknowledge it ?
Could I create a new credit history by listing the addresses Ive actually lived in for 6 years and getting brand new bank account etc not linked to my old parents address which this DCA has on its records and thus avoiding them chasing me? I have no utilities/mobile phone in my name, and no credit cards. I have no other debt. I am not on the electoral roll anywhere.
I am fully and legitimately employed and pay all taxes.
Many thanks.

Is the national insurance number on your credit report?
Please any knowledge of this and advice to my situation greatly appreciated.
Thank you.0 -
Can't remember TBH....when did you last hear from SLC? What's the problem with paying it back now you are earning?0
-
No it's not.
There's good threads on here with advice on statute barred debts with sample letters. Satute barred debts cannot be pursued via the courts, so you could not get a CCJ.
Someone will be along soon with better advice, but i would have a look at some other threads for the sample letters and get one posted off to the DCA[STRIKE]DFW Nerd number 729[/STRIKE]Debt Free & Proud0 -
thank you for your reply Miss Marple.
Of course I would be very grateful for anyone with similar experience, or knowledge of how to deal with DCA posting on this topic.
Pretty much the biggest problem Ive got is that I dont know for sure that it is 6 years or more - and I dont want to contact them prematurely to findout it isnt and I have to pay (having said that - it is definitly at least 5 and a half years - why do they wait so long to make contact anyway?)
cheers

OB, I think that perhaps the reason that you're not getting much response is because there are so many people on here who are desperately struggling to pay off debts, who would love to run away from them but are trying to face up to their responsibilities. You say that you're employed/earning and have no other debt, so is there a reason why you can't pay off the student loan or do you just not really want to?
Sorry if it's a bit harsh, and in response to your question, I don't know if your NI is on your credit file, but I know that student loans will ALWAYS find you somehow. Someone I know ran away from about 30k of debt and got away with the whole lot but student loans still found her through her employer!0 -
oh, and to Floss - thanks too. I would have no major problem paying what I owe legally. I have some pretty major objections paying off illegally imposed charges and arrears to a company that bought a debt without my knowledge then sends threatening letters.
the charges and arrears are more than the loan taken out origianlly and I had paid off a large part of that before - and thought the matter settled 6 years ago.
However - my bad for not ensuring this at the time. It doesnt mean Im going to roll over and pay something unnecessarily.
Although I am starting to worry as it could mean financial blacklisting effectively if they go to court.
Would Honours student loans and a DCA write to me after 6 years to try and get money back? Their letter doesnt give dates of last contact just says we have written to you in the past and you have not responded - Ive received nothing for years.
Has anyone been through something similar ? Many thanks0 -
well Ive been in the position of having several thousands of debt incurred by me on credit cards and then lost a job. Not nice and I have every sympathy for people here.
I worked hard and scrimped in order to pay them all off in full.
I am not running away from legal obligations. Im trying to get advice as to how legal the debt recovery will be. And also to find out if I can effectively start a new credit file covering the past 6 legitimate years if the DCA manage to CCJ me or get me bad credit reporting.
That is all. Would you want to pay off a company that says you owe them something when you may have no legal obligation to ?
Thanks for reply though. If there is a better forum you would like me to move to then I will.0 -
Not at all, but it wasn't clear from your first post that you thought you'd already paid off the debt in full. If that's the case, and it's just the debt colection agency's fees that you don't want to pay, it's a bit different to not wanting to pay back the debt itself.
Whatever though, I'm afraid that I still don't know the answer to your question! Maybe if you edit your first post to add what you just said about having paid it off and being charged unfair charges, then someone else who knows more about it all will be able to help.
Good luck!0 -
I thought Id paid off HSL as an agreement as there was no way I could have afforded to pay it all off. Obviously not and they are still looking for it but its taken 6 years to contact me at my parents adress which hadnt changed.
Do HSL resort to courts to enforce arrears ? Are their letters bluster in order to try and reopen a debt that should be barred from recovery ?
If people think Im morally wrong that is their point of view but Ive paid well over the odds over many years on credit and I dont have any sympathy for firms which deal in others misery by buying debts.
My question remains reference the national insurance number - and is it possible to rebuild a cedit history unconnected to addresses more than 6 years old IF they get a CCJ on me at an address more than 6 years old ?
Cheers (but exasperated).
