Gave job to someone else

Posting on behalf of my wife, who was due to start a week’s (paid) trial for a new job today. The offer letter read as “We would like to offer you the role of xyz subject to a one week paid trial.”

After messing her around with the start date, she turned up today to be told her manager was off sick, they actually didn’t want to see her until next week. And that the original role she interviewed for they had given to someone else!!!! Without telling her. And they subsequently sent her home!!

There is another role “if she wants it” but she doesn’t (a variety of reasons this isn’t suitable including the salary and responsibility level).

Is there anything we can do?!! I am so angry she’s been treated this way. Can they be forced to at least pay her for today or for this week? Can we demand they at least refund her transport costs?

  • I know when the goal posts changed once after interview, employer made offer but with a 4 week trial it made me re-think if I wanted to work for them as the writing was on the wall about a trial alone being offered. (ie they didn't want to really employ me in the first place)

1 day's unpaid trial is my personal allowance.

I've noticed a lot of morals in the employment world has gone down hill - only yesterday I had to follow up to make sure I'd been unsuccessful in last interview. Probably a good job.

Guess you could ask for some recompense if your lady is sure she won't want to work there in future.

That would be hugely annoying, however i dont think they are under any legal obligation to compensate.

And on the plus side, its better she finds out now what a bunch of disorganised moral-less scrotes they are rather than down the line.

I'd certainly ask for transport costs, but likely you'll need to write it off as a lucky escape...
