    Thanks D&DD
I work in blackheath but not on sundays and had no idea that there was a famers market here.
    will look this sunday.
  • Does it have to be just breasts? I noticed that FR chicken breasts at my local supermarket were 11.99 per kilo, whole FR chicken 4.38 (I think) per kilo. It actually meant I got a whole chicken for EXACTLY the same price as the breasts, got home, jointed it into 6 pieces - breasts for tea, rest for the freezer and a litre of stock from the bones.

PS If you go to Blackheath farmers market (I used to live there), there is a fab farmer who is there every week called Keith Bennett (or FarmerKeith to us) - his sausages and pork chops are truly fantastic .... he sometimes does chicken too, but often only as whole birds.

yes - i find that is generally true: buying FR chicken breasts separately is very expensive. once you have the hang of jointing a chicken it is actually quick and easy to do, and the freezer will always have some chicken parts to offer. i save the wings up for a while until i have a quantity big enough for a BBQ or chicken wings as a starter, and the carcases can also wait in the freezer until i have time for stock making, and then i do 2 or 3 together in the pot for a large batch.

if it really must be breasts only, free range turkey breasts are much more cost effective.

I am a veggie and find cutting an animal up very difficult.

Could ask DH and his DD to do it as they eat it! I just cook it.

Never thought of turkey breast, will look at those as well

    Thanks

Annie, if you buy from a butcher, I'm sure he'll joint it for you.

I rarely buy breasts seperately - I like to make stock - a whole bird goes much further and if you are buying FR/ organic you don't want to waste a scrap (well I don't!)

    ;)

Didnt know butchers did that, thanks.
There is one near me that the staff in my office use, he does advertise that he is an organic one.

maybe I could ask someone from my office to go in and get me one,
and ask him to make it look less like a chicken!! and who ever goes could have the bits I dont want! ;)
Still must be cheaper than sainsburys.
