They aren't silent so it can by down to your perception and that of your neighbours as to whether they are noisy. A lot will depend on individual circumstances.

Yes, I agree, I have to admit I find the noise of the external unit a bit obtrusive when sitting in the garden, although it isn't loud and doesn't bother the neighbours. Definitely something to bear in mind, especially if "outside round the back" for you would put the unit very close to a neighbours outside sitting area.

Well, I suppose we do drone on a bit. ;)

Are the fans of the external units really that noisy? Hadn't thought about that being a problem. Not sure if they would count as changing the external appearance of the house, especially as they wouldn't be visible from the front but worth checking with the council who own the site.
The outside unit for our system is so quiet, that when we first had it installed I had to go close to it to check if the fan was actually running:rotfl:

    Hi

Agree, once the unit has pre-heated the circuit & settled down to normal running you have to be pretty close to hear the fan or compressor even if the birds aren't chirping away .... not all units are as quiet as ours, but I doubt that many decent quality offerings would be noticeable at much more than half a dozen paces when operating under normal load conditions.

I agree with Z and Savvy, as ours is pretty quiet too ...... but playing Devil's Advocate, I only use mine during the day to make use of PV, or to maintain warmth during the shoulder months. So I suppose at night with less background noise it might be more noticeable, though I really don't think there's a problem, however if you are running it all night to maintain warmth and use E7, then that suggests cold weather, and closed windows, so neighbours, again, should be fine.
