You need to speak to PALS- patient advice and liaison service.
The number should be available on the interweb.

How *major* or *serious* is the op?

The reason I ask is that all the NHS gets is *bad reviews* and I have to point out at this stage that the LGI have both saved my daughters life and given her the gift of near perfect speech/hearing.

If there is a damn good reason for the cancellations then I'm afraid thats what free health care is all about ~ I doubt the are messing you about for fun.

  • I know that operations are being cancelled if they are medium priority so that more minor surgery can go ahead (all to do with quotas) but if it's a serious or life threatening condition that requires surgery, it doesn't get cancelled unless they've got a really good reason. After all, it's better for them not to reach the quota than to be sued by a patients family.

If cancellations have been pretty close to ops, it could be due to sickness in staff or something equally mundane. People forget the NHS is a company and if staff are off sick or rooms are out of use for any reason, productivity goes down.

I hope you manage to get it sorted out.

  • With respect tigtag,
I am not having a pot shot at the NHS, They saved her life.

I have the utmost respect for the nurses and doctors
but if you go into hospital for an operation that will need an "H.D.U." bed (high dependancy unit) I guess its comes under the "serious" part and then they send you home again. Something is wrong.
That is what i was asking for info about

Maybe i should have put my original question differently

I'm glad your daughters are ok

With respect - this is my favourite phrase when on the informaion superhighway ;)

You see how we managed to get our points across without having a barney - some other boards should take heed :p

Anyhoo, back to your mam - have they given you reasons for the cancellations?

My OH had an endoscopy cancelled LOADS of times and as it turns out it was down to bad management  IIRC it was something to do with them booking the apointments BEFORE schedueling the staff!!!

  • If she needs to be on HDU then they must have good reasons not to do the op. I know the NHS has its problems and the reason we hear so much bad press about them is because they are poorly managed but generally patients aren't sent home because the surgeon fancied a round of golf instead. Try using PALS as was suggested previously or get your mother to ask her consultant what's going on (unless you have power of attorney in which case you could ask, otherwise they'll refuse to talk to you because of data protection). Sounds like you just want someone to tell you what's going on, which is natural when you're worried about your mum.

  • ))))))))))))))))HUGS)))))))))))))

Having been in your Mums situation I can well understand how She and You feel. When mine was cancelled for the 4th time I was bereft, and decided to speak to the consultant. (well I say spoke I was incoherrant I was so upset:o but thats me drama queen per se:cool: ). He was as frustrated as I was at the cancellations due to the lack of HDU beds and said that it was happening far too frequently. He asked if I or a member of my Family would write and our concerns to the Chief executive as he felt that this would be helpful to the situation and it was his stock advice to all patients having ops cancelled.
My DS did a fab letter but before it was posted I had my admission date and bless my surgeon even came in off annual leave to carry out surgery.
Can I suggest that maybe you ring your Mums consultants Secretary and set up a meeting or even a telephone meeting voicing your concerns and getting there view on it.

I hope your Mum gets her op soon and that she is soon on the road to recovery.

Good Luck and Keep us Posted.

*lack of beds* often means *lack of staff*

When I had DD2 (whom would need a NICU bed) we were told that there weren't any available.

DD2 being the uncooperative little madam that she is prefered to play the *can I get into the record book of speedy delivery* game though.

When they realised they couldn't move me to another hospital they *found* a bed and there were more free on the ward.

I was told that it was actually staff they were short of and called in emergancy cover for the new arrival.
