NI number on mortgage application

I gave my mortgage advisor my national insurance number. I had my doubts but he works for a FSA backed company and I told myself i was overreacting. However, now I want to know if it's normal for someone to need to give out their NI number for a mortgage application....
Thanks in advance.

All to do with proving who you are / identity checks / money laundering.0

Yes very normal. Lenders ask for it as part of the application.
As above. Usually get it from the payslips anyway.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a mortgage adviser, so you need to take my word for it. We ask for it, some lenders need it, some do not. But if anyone asked us to go to a lender who did not ask for it, I would be a little dubious.

Not really sure what nefarious things a broker could do with your NI number anyway. Advance warning: your solicitor will want it too.0

Cant wait for the reaction when you have to give your bank details, photo ID, copy of credit report, and proof of address.0

I have already done all of the above with no qualms. But I was always led to believe, all the above TOGETHER with NI number was a security risk.0
