  • Flipping heck.....loads of ideas............I'm starving! :)
I just think lots of little things, tiny quartered sandwiches as older people seem to want to try everything within reason, but can't fit it in :)
Weight loss 6lb/16lb 10lb to go
I spend an insane amount of time wondering if I am doing it right, sometimes I remind myself that I am doing my best....and that is enough

Kim Kim - I loved those flan bases - I think they had tinned peach slices and orange jelly on them-served with evaporated milk or Birds Dream Topping at our sophisticated family buffets when I was a child.
I agree Doingit - aren't people lovely to take the time to share their ideas. I really, really want to eat some cheese and pineapple on sticks not to mention that sausage plait!
Thanks purpleybat I shall look in the sweetie aisle - it's my favourite part of the shop so no hardship and it's all in the name of research to validate Lessons' recommendation.

Kim kim my mum used to make that! Tinned peaches and jelly. Then whipped cream or ice cream to go with. Yummy. Or butterscotch Angel Delight...in ramekins...so fancy ;)

... a couple of the guests are so unadventurous and HATE garlic -they are so funny, you'd think it was a poison and one whiff sends them over the edge.

Have you considered that they might be vampires?! :rotfl:

My mum used to dissolve a packet jelly and whip a tin of evaporated milk then fold it into the jelly. A sort of budget mousse.

Thank you for the reminiscences on flans, angel delight and jellies - I loved those puddings!
The garlic hating guests aren't vampires but their aversion is strong enough to sow some seeds of doubt!
The buffet has happened and it was lovely. It went on until late in the evening with lots of chatting, laughing and sing songs - just like family occasions when I was a child (except back then I had no control over the music so Max Bygraves used to croon in the background - singalongamax)
The menu was well received and saved me lots of money.
I'm almost embarrassed to share some of my previous costs for comparisons but I'm among friends and you know I'm a reforming character.
Last buffet I spent £30 on a sponge style cake from m and s. This time I made 2 cakes myself (which I was really nervous about) but they seemed to taste good - total cost around £5 .
I previously bought 12 mini jelly pots from m and s for £12:eek:. This time, common sense prevailed -total cost around £2 including tinned fruit to go in them.
Now my final confession is pretty bad. Last time I bought ready prepared strawberries with a small tub of cream - £20!!!!! This time I undertook the "arduous preparation" myself. 2 punnets of lovely strawberries and a pot of cream £6.50.
    Once again THANK YOU EVERYONE.
Your suggestions, hints & tips and food reminiscences have been great.
