Contract types

Hi all,

Might seem a bit of daft question but I'm a bit perplexed and would like opinions.

Looking at jobs lately and would like to confirm what job type they are for example permanent/temporary.

Most state: Full Time, Permanent

Or if its a fixed term or temporary it states so.

But I've found a part time job that's listed as Part Time, Contract. Not temporary, fixed term or permanent.

Now within this companies job list search menu via their site you can filter out the jobs via the contract type with the following options;

Permanent
Fixed Term
Contract
Freelance
Temporary
Casual

So is a Part Time, Contract a permanent job or temporary. Or is it classed as contract and is permanent but because its under so many hours a week it can't be listed as permanent?

Surely if it was a part time and had an end date it would be listed as Fixed term.

Could anyone with knowledge clarify anything please.

Not that this is necessarily how they use the term, but it might be something like 'until X project is finished' so not permanent, but they can't give an exact end date for fixed term.

  • I hate to be pedantic, but there's no such thing as a "permanent" contract within the proper meaning of the word.

(I became so accustomed to one of our board directors telling union officials this that I used to hear it in my sleep. Zzzzzzz...)

Ring them up and ask them what they mean. (You could also ask if they really offer jobs for life...)
  • Yep if in doubt query with the employer before starting an application.

My current job on a job board was listed as part time (and it's not the first time that a part time job is actually full time I've noticed) and I have a contract that says 0 hours per month so it doesn't mean a lot.
  • In finance a fixed term is a temporary role that is on the payroll of the company whereas a contract is a day rate and not on the payroll of the company.

I found out, for those that are interested.

It's a permanent roll with the company. Basically they list it as contract because they're rotor goes up the week before and you should be contracted for 24 hours within each week.

Bit of an how's you do if you ask me.
