Were the e-mails on a server hosted by the employer? Were they e-mails that were held on the persons own personal e-mail address?
If its the latter, I would say its extremely likely that it would be the only way to recover the e-mails other than through a court order.
If it was by the employer, they should have kept them for the minimum amount of time required by law.
I know from my own SAR recently that my employer kept information on me going back 18 years. Was weird seeing all that stuff again, kinda irrelevant stuff, but when reading it I could remember it like it just happened. Anyway...0
