Paying off mortgage advice please

This may be a really daft question but do you need to get solicitors involved to complete a motgage.
Is it just a simple matter of giving the mortgage company the money and they hand over the deeds, having charged you for the privilage, or is there more to it than that.
Sorry if this is really dumb but I've never been in a position to pay off my motgage before and everyone seems intent on getting as much money out of you as they can so I thought I'd ask on here first.
Last question, I've read on here that deeds are now held electronically by the Land registry, does this mean paper deeds are redundent or will I still need to keep them in a safe place, if so what are the options open to me for storing the deeds.
Any help to remove this mill stone from my neck would be appreciated

Paper deeds are indeed redundant, the definitive copy is stored by the land registry electronically.
Essentially you need to get the redemption figure from your lender, i.e. what you need to pay to clear the mrotgage on a particular date. Pay them, and, well that's about it really.0 -
Thanks for that, sounds nice and easy :cool:0
