Linking to CCCS etc in sigs: How to go about it

Options
This is connected to the 'be careful when you google cccs' thread, please read that one first!

VERY IMPORTANT: DO NOT PLACE LINKS IN YOUR SIGNATURE WITHOUT PERMISSION! THEY WILL BE REMOVED! READ THE INFO BELOW!

1) email the abuse team at abuse@moneysavingexpert.com and request to be allowed links in your signature. Make sure you tell them your username, who you want to link to, and why. As we seem to have trouble with both CCCS and National Debtline, I would suggest these and Payplan. I don't know how many people they will allow to do this, and it can take a day or so, so please be patient.

2) hopefully you will receive an email back giving permission. Eventually they will put your name in the list of approved sig links on the site feedback board, although at the moment names are missing because of the techie problems.

3) To change your sig, click on 'user CP' near the top of the page. Then click 'edit signature' on the options side bar.

4) The edit signature box is just like the new post box. In the top right-hand corner of the grey box is a little button with two 'A's in it; one normal and one that is bold, italic and underlined. Click on this button once.

5) Your beautiful sig will suddenly look like a bunch of normal text with the odd bit of gobbledegook. Don't worry! You haven't broken it!

Now, you add links by typing

[url=

followed by the website. So for cccs it would be cccs.co.uk. The web address has to be enclosed by speech marks. Then close the bracket like this without a space
]

6)Then type the text that you want to appear. In my sig this is just 'CCCS'

7) After, type Remember to use square brackets.

8) Test - hopefully when you click CCCS in your sig it will link to the real CCCS website!

Also, I understand that many will not want, or maybe not be allowed, to change their sigs like this. It might be an idea to cut and paste mine, tigerfeet2006's, fermi's or wherediditallgo's sigs (or those of anyone else who gets the okay) to give to newbies who need help. This is to try and minimise the risk of people inadvertantly signing up with the dispicable lot trying to dupe people who are at their lowest. I feel really strongly about this and want to feel that I am doing something about it, even if it is only a small thing!

    Thanks guys!

Thanks for that excellent post Silvercharming.

Another way to add the links is to copy and paste someone elses sig (with their permission) into the signature box.

I never knew that about the links in sigs. I guess i'm just an innocent that wouldn't think about dodgy internet goings on.

I keep quoting fermi's sig. (Thought i was going to get done for plagiarism)
I've only done one where i put the links in though - they don't copy and paste over, and i'm getting lazy in my old age.

    Thanks for highlighting this SC.

    :o:o

It's just that there are so many newbies crying out for help and some people having the links in their sigs makes it easier to get the info to people. We've found it a godsend on the BR board.

Same as I wish we had a sticky with the standard letters in.
