I wanna build my own PC but Much Help is Needed Please

Hi all,

My PC is what some would say a litle out of date now lol.

I am looking to build my own one, firstly so I can understand how they are built etc (i like knowing how things work) and also so I can build a good spec machine cheaper than buying it (the moneysaving side of me!).

I want the machine to be able to play top end games such as call of duty 4 etc but also do the usual office things well.

In essense I would liek the below;

500gb hard drive
Good graphics card to play these sort of games
very good processor (no idea if pentium or athlon etc are better)
need to be able to access the internet
good sound card

not sure what else really. I have heard many things conflict with eachother hardware wise but just dont know where to start.

Looking to budget about £300-£400 quid max really.

Any help would be great! Thanks all.

  • Ive never built my own PC but my boyfirend and his friend have built quite a few, to be honest I think 300-400 is a bit optimistic for a top of the range PC. Think my boyfriend spent around 700 ish. Might be able to do it for the 300-400 if you buy second hand though.
  • My BIL used to own a gaming shop and built all of the PCs to be able to handle top spec games. Each one cost him a grand.

    He's now emigrating and selling the PCs (about 18 months old) for £300 each.

    If you want one I can see if he has any left, and what the spec is. Whereabouts in the country are you?

  • I think you could shop around and potentially buy brand new if you are prespared to cut corners in your requirements. Have you looked at the best buys threads etc? Buy a computer mag - they cost about £4/£5 but give good advice on PCs they have trialled, also do ads for local and online comps shops. We bought through a company advertised in one of the mags and got a great deal with dual core processer, 2g ram, 340gb hdd and so on. You can sometimes increase the amount of HDD space by 100/150 gb for about £50.
  • P.S. Pentium are better than athlon - certainly avoid celeron if you possibly can.
