If somebody wanting to get funny with you or harass you, they don't need to know your surname. They simply wait for you after work and follow you home.
It is very easy to find an awful lot about people without knowing their surname.

In my experience concern over personal data tends to come from the older generation, which may be a function of being less used to technology. Most millennials are pretty open to the idea of sharing their lives with the world on social media.0
