Job Application Turned Bad!

Looking for advice please.

I was offered a job but the offer ended up being withdrawn because of my credit history....that was fair enough, I disclosed the information before the checks were done, we parted on good terms...

About 2 months later, I've learnt that colleagues and managers at my current job know that I applied to this competitor and they also know the reasons I couldn't take the job.

I obviously kept the whole thing secret apart from telling family and close friends. There are obvious links to the other company and my current job, I am 100% sure that the other company have spoken internally which has ended up with them sharing with people which has meant my seniors have found out.

What are my rights with the company I applied with the job for? At this point I should mention the company in question are a credit reference agency - if any company should know about the importance of confidentiality, it should have been them. This is genuinely going to harm my career in my current job and generalised comments to our team about 'knowing some of you are looking elsewhere' have already surfaced.

thanks in advance!

Knowing that you applied is potentially due to them asking for a reference if you were at credit checking stage?

The reason it didnt go ahead could simply be 'obvious' given you were at referencing stage and this is a company which does credit checks.

Its hard to do anything without facts of who disclosed what and to who. It may be your current company are the ones who have broken confidentiality rather than the prospective employer.

The first question is always how long have you worked for your current employer??
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.56% of current retirement "pot" (as at end January 2025)
  • my issue isn't with my current employer. My issue is with the company that I applied with. My current employer hasn't told the prospective employer, they had no knowledge of my credit history as they did not require consumer checks when i joined them 5 years ago. They have only found out afyer someone at the prospective employer told someone senior at my current employer......note - i dont think it was done to spite me, I think the two people are friends and have gossiped about the issue. I know the name of the person that told the person at my company.

They definitely didnt ask for references.

So you want to get both these individuals in trouble, both the person who initially disclosed to a friend, and your colleague for spreading it around your work?

Making a big deal out of it with the prospective employer will only draw attention at your current employer. I'd personally keep my head down.

As long as you have not concealed any relevant information you should have disclosed then for now you keep your head down ignore the gossip and snide remarks.

Within industry sectors it is common for information to migrate its called networking.

Knowing and proving are two very different things. If you go around saying Fred Bloggs told Bill Smith, without cast iron proof, you could end up in far more trouble than the alleged offender. You could be sued for defamation.
I can understand you being extremely unhappy with the situation, but tread carefully.

My worry would be, if your current employer decides to "reassess" your credit history, if you're still within the same industry.

You could find you now breach your current employers terms of employment!

  • I have no desire to get anyone in trouble but the company in question have a duty to keep my application confidential and they absolutely failed to do that. It has definitely put me in a disadvantage at my current employer too. I wanted advice on how to approach this with the prospective employer.
  • If you think releasing confidential information about my job application and reasons for not getting that job is networking, I don’t think you can help me here.

I don’t think it’s entirely comparable but I would consider this a significant data breach, like someone accessing your credit profile without your permission.
