Turned down because of commuting distance

Maybe in 2am it's doable in 2h and if the work is in north London around M1. Otherwise it's 1.5h from Luton, yet alone Birmingham.its about 2 hours by train/ same by car if the traffic isn't bad.
it does sound like you would change jobs fairly soon / be renting the house out etc..
The fact is Birmingham to London full week daily commute is killing and unsustainable no matter the mode of transportation.
Get a job and rent in Birmingham for a while then go for a mortgage.0 -

It's not just the time - it's the cost. An annual season ticket from Birmingham New Street to London Euston is over £5,700 - you an add another £1000+ if you need a travelcard. Times two.
With two people, driving might be cheaper but then you have the congestion charge and parking so you have to be earning considerably more to justify it - and I suspect that the sort of jobs that offer that type of salary are typically going to require longer hours and more commitment than a long daily commute allows.
Although the OPs inital post suggests that they would only be looking at living in the Birmingham property at weekends and renting during the week - more additonal costs and another reason why you can see the mortgage company not being happy about lending.0 -
Previously you said the commute wasn’t an option for you and that you had no intention of doing it.

Hence the reason mortgage lenders adopt the policies they do.0
