Planning to cook a sponge cake for Christmas party but how long in advance?

Hi,
I am planning to use my Christmas tree tin I bought from Lidl to make a Christmas cake for the family party planned mid-December.
How long in advance do you think I could make this cake? I am planning to cover it in green icing and decorate the tree with some little sugar Christmas shapes too. I am working right up until the day before the party and also am out the night before, so the icing will need to be done on Thursday at the latest.
Do you think it would be OK baking it on Sunday or do you think I need to do it on Wednesday instead?
I rarely bake cakes and they don't last long with my OH around so I have never had to keep one for long!!

You could make the cake and freeze it, sponge freezes well then ice it when you've got the time.0

Sponge cake doesn't keep well, if I'm making a sponge for someone I'd usually make it on the day or if not possible then on the day before. If you want to do it in advance then some sort of fruit cake would keep much better.
Didn't realise spong cake freezes well, that could be very usefull, does the icing freeze well or would that always needs to be done fresh?0 -
I've frozen the sponge plenty of times with no probs. Not sure about the icing though, sorry.0

Freeze them un iced - the icing goes sweaty and sticky!0

Sponge cake doesn't keep well
Sorry, I have to disagree with this. IME, sponge cake (my usual recipe is equal weights of sugar, butter, SR flour and eggs) keeps perfectly fresh for several days, left in the tin.
I would expect a Madeira-type recipe to keep for longer. I'd leave the icing to the day before at the earliest. Any earlier and the decoration will start to deteriorate.

Hi everyone and thanks for the feedback.
I think my only option is to make it on Thursday and then ice early Saturday morning.
I'm off to find a large cake tin! Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

Mr Bad Examples choc yoghurt cake is meant to be made a few days in advance and wrapped in foil. You can leave the cocoa out and add vanilla or lemon essence. It stays moist for several days. I'm using the lemon version for a wedding cake I'm making for Monday (aaaagh!)“the princess jumped from the tower & she learned that she could fly all along. she never needed those wings.”
