Car finance personal loan for ex boyfriend

  • I hope you get this sorted :(
  • Thank you everyone. When I say worthless I have been quoted nearly £4K for interior work only, not including all the body damage, so I’ve been offered next to nothing in its current state (only parts) and I’m heavily pregnant and in no position to sea with the hassle - it has mould all over it the interior is ruined as paint all over it too, one of the wheels is missing, the suspension is gone and he tried to weld the underneath himself also the engine is broken it won’t even run and battery is flat. As well as lots of other things I don’t really understand 🙈The mechanic says it’s appalling what they have done and doesn’t understand what they could have done to it to get in in such a state in just over a year 😢 so yes I could probably sell for a bit of money but doesn’t touch the sides of my finance which is the real issue

I'm struggling to see how a debt of ~£14k would be "written off". If this were me I would be expecting it to be vigorously pursued. If the finance company do make it magically disappear then great, but I always advocate the addage of "hope for the best, plan for the worst".

I think the question you initially asked about what would happen if you just didn't pay, has already been answered. My answer to you would be that it could possibly cause you significant difficulty in obtaining credit in future, and possibly restrict your career depending on your profession.

Genuinely hope it all works out for you, I have a friend who found herself in a similar situation some years ago (saddled with ex-partner's debt) and it took her a great deal of effort to free herself - but she got there in the end.

As you say it depends on whether they will pursue a debt for £11500 or if they sell it on if their policy is to pursue it. The worst option would be if they decided to obtain a CCJ against you and maybe a second charge on your property. Otherwise it is 6 years showing as a default on your credit record which may or may not be a problem depending on whether you need to remortgage or change banks or whatever. No one can say for sure whether they will pursue you for it though, all we can do is surmise. Ultimately though if you are going further into debt by repaying it I would stop the repayments and write to them saying you are unable to pay and take it from there.

A lesson for you and anyone else considering taking out finance for a partner but financial abuse is unacceptable. Unfortunately little can be done though.

I am struggling to picture damage so great that a £14k car becomes worthless.
Can you give it a thorough clean and put it on eBay as it is? List the fault and someone will buy it (probably for a price that will surprise you!)
