Make up big brands?

Hi, I've always wondered about big make up brands and whether they're worth the money. I've jumped about a bit recently when it comes to foundation.
I used No 7 Stay Perfect for years then I realised even though it's 24 hour wear, by about lunch time it always looked like it had rubbed off.
I then went back to Leichner which was oily and heavy and greasy but lasted. After a few months it was making my skin terrible and so dry and flaky.
I then went into boots to try a few including the Est!e Lauder Doublewear which I was told was well worth the money.
I got a sample bit also went back to No 7 counter where the saleswoman told me a primer and good skin regime would make all the difference. So I bought their primer, a better shade of No 7 Stay Perfect than I had before and a decent brush to apply. I am really happy with how it goes on in the morning but again by lunch time it often looks like it's disappeared.
I tried the Est!e Lauder Doublewear for a day and wasn't overly impressed by the colour but felt it lasted a bit longer.
I'm just not sure if it's worth £36 a bottle rather than £14 compared to Est!e Lauder.
What's other people views/recommendations when it comes to foundation and make up in general?
Thanks

Compared to No7 that should have said!0

I laugh at companies calling foundation 24 hours, total rubbish. It is just a marketing thing.
Firstly Double Wear was created for oily skin but for some reason, Estee Lauder staff push it at everyone. You mentioned your skin dry and flakey using the Leichner it was originally a stage makeup. I used to wear it many years ago. So if your skin is dry foundation can soak up.
Okay, do you use setting powder? It can help the foundation stay longer.
Most women carry a makeup bag with them to touch up. The old saying powdering your nose. There are setting sprays Urban Decay one gets great reviews from people. If you touch your face a lot it can rub the foundation off.
Yes, I use high-end makeup. I gave a friend a Tarte palette and she was shocked at how much better the pigment and texture is compared to her normal Avon stuff. The old saying buys cheap buy twice. At the moment I am using Clarins foundation Skin Illusion, it's lightweight serum-like do I expect it to last until midnight no. I dislike Estee Lauder foundation always have, Dior, Guerlain, Chanel all the way for me. I did get colour matched and a sample of a No7 foundation people raving about and hated it.
You might try IT Cosmetics CC Boots have started selling it and even do smaller tubes. Supposed to be a primer, foundation, sunblock and moisturiser all in one.0 -
Hi donnac, thanks for all the great advice. I will have a look at a setting spray and also the IT cosmetics you mention.
So how about skincare. Do you have any recommendations for that? I have only recently started properly taking care of my skin and now have a basic regime with cleansing toning and moisturising but am so confused by all the other products like hyaluronic and glycolic acids and serums. No idea where to begin and how/why/when to use them?!0 -
I use double wear and it lasts all day.
I used a moisturiser and spf under it. I apply it with an expensive beauty blender. The cheap ones didn't seem to do the same amount of makeup sticking all day.
You need some powder or highlighter to fix it.
There is 60 colours of double wear ask for more samples to get your perfect fit. I have dry skin and prefer to spend on a good foundation. I save on mascara as love cheap own brands. Brands like elf are excellent quality and cheap.0 -

First of all, you need to make sure your skin is really dry as opposed to dehydrated. I have dry skin but it can also get dehydrated from time to time. What cleansers/toners do you use? Hylauronic acid good for hydration and glycolic acid is an exfoliator. Caroline Hirons is my favourite beauty blogger/expert and I'd suggest you read her blog. She also cheat sheets for all of the confused souls out there, like us.
When it comes to the make-up, I have used both high end and cheaper brands. I can say some high brands lived up to reputation (Bobby Brown), some disappointed (Charlotte Tilbury) when it comes to foundation. I do love Clarins lipsticks but not their mascaras. I have been also using some Elf, NYX and No7 and there are products I love from each brand.
On a daily basis, I will use foundation, concealer and blush/bronzer - I wear eyelash extensions so don't need mascara. When I'm buying a foundation, I will ask one for dry skin. I often read the reviews on Boots and other websites and will start reading from the low rating reviews to see what they didn't like first. Also remember, some brands change the product formulas so while you might like it initially, it might not be the same after a while.ally.0 -
Saving for tomorrow, what kid of setting powder do you use on top of it. I've still got my sample of DW so I'm going to use it today as work will be the real test. I work on a building site!
Asajj, at the moment I use a Nivea exfoliating cleaner I use at night (X2) then I use Simples toner. Then a night cream. Where is the best place to buy the acids and serums? I will check out the beauty blogger, thanks for the recommendation!
I think part of my problem as well is I don't really know what kind of skin I have. I don't know how to tell. It doesn't give me any major problems since I've started cleansing and moisturising better so I'd possibly say normal skin?
When asked what kind of skin I have in boots I say I don't really know and the reps look at me like I'm daft. Also when they ask what kind of finish do you want on a foundation, Dewey or Matt or something else and again I feel daft because I've no idea what they really mean!0 -

I use the IT cosmetics CC cream & I sometimes use EL double wear & Tarte foundation too. Prob my top 3.
For skincare can I recommend Liz Earle cleanse & polish. I try many others, but I always go back to that.0 -

Dewy is more glowy, radiant look and I'd say better for dry skin while matte is mattifying. Depends on the look you want.
Have a look at this : https://www.carolinehirons.com/2011/11/dry-or-dehydrated-cheat-sheet.html
I'd suggest looking at Superdrug vitamin E series for cleanser, serum and moisturiser as a starting point. For the acids, probably wait until you are a bit more knowledgeable.
Ordinary website is a good place for acids with plenty of information but can feel overwhelming. The Ordinary websiteally.0 -
On one hand - half of the price of highly marketed brands goes to advertising. On the other - you don't really want to experiment on your on skin. I always prefer 2-3 most popular brands in their category. Why? It's like Pepsi, more sugar for less money. They try harder and keep prices lower to fight for their cut.0

I use either guerlain meteorites or the Laura Geller powder foundation.
I mix 3 small squirts of double wear and one part highlighter. I find with double wear it allows variety of wear if I match my skin perfectly it can look really natural or one shade darker to give more done up look. If you're working outside remember your sun factor. I use a dry powder spray to set the foundation.0
