A fair point to make although if I could afford to go away for a year and not rent my house out while still covering the mortgage I wouldn't be on this forum!

Returning to the property after 12 months would be the ideal but the main factor in that will be whether or not we can get jobs in the same city/area: haven't approached my current employers yet about taking a sabbatical rather than quitting completely but it's not something they've done in the past so assume I won't be treated any different.

Obviously if the only work we could find is far enough away that commuting wasn't an option we would have to look at renting somewhere in the job location for however long and allowing any tenant to stay in our own house until we are in a position to move back.
