Thanksgiving gift

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone out there has any ideas what I could give as a thanksgiving gift.
We have been invited for a meal at an american friends home and didnt really want to take the normal chocs and wine. I would really like to find something that is traditional to give at thanksgiving if at all possible.
Would a small basket of home made jams be appropriate?
I am quite crafty (but hey not something too difficult though lol) so anything homemade would be good too.
Thanks

I think homemade produce is very traditional and appropriate.
Have a look at this...food/ harvest type gifts seem to be just the thing.

Thank you both for taking the time to reply.
Had a look around the site that you mentioned ashli and found a metal decorated tub full of cookies mmmmmm I may make up a batch of different flavours ....walnut, white choc chip, etc..and pop in a basket and wrap in cellophene.
How about a photo (instead of a picture) of Boston...give me an excuse to travel over
....but they may have to wait for that one lol 0 -
Actually Sally, I was in a bit of a flippant mood yesterday so I don't think my reply was truly all that helpful - sorry

From what I can remember, the American thanksgiving tradition dates back to the first winter that the pilgims spent in the USA which was a really harsh one, and they many of them would have starved to death if it wasn't for the kindness and generosity of the native american indian tribes nearby who gave them wheat. or bread. or food of some kind. possibly turkey.
So your idea of taking some home made produce (such as jams or chutneys) to your American friends as a thanksgiving gift is entirely appropriate and something which I am sure they would appreciate.
I hope you have a nice thanksgiving dinner!0 -
Marmite

Some of our american friends are convinced that it should be used to tarmac roads & they are shocked that we actually feed it to children :rotfl:Lurking in a galaxy far far away...0 -
For Thanksgiving it would be pretty unusual to take something as a gift for the host/hostess to keep themselves, but more accepted to take something that can be shared with all present on the day...Thanksgiving meals are all about people coming together and are quite often a bit 'pot luck' with various people bringing different parts of the meal along. Your best bet may be to contact the host/hostess and say that you would like to contribute to the meal and ask what it would be helpful for you to bring.
I'm Canadian rather than American, but other than the date being different I think the traditions around Thanksgiving are pretty similar across the border.Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!0
