Opinions on smoothies

I am tempted to buy a blender after listening to my friend talk about how she makes lovely smoothies for her breakfast and how healthy they are.
However, I have looked online there are reports about smoothies being unhealthy.
Does anyone here make them and have a blender?

I used to make them and I found I had to use a lot of fruit to make them so not exactly inexpensive. You have to use some sort of liquid with them and I found I was going through a lot of juice too. I also ended up taking a reaction to one smoothie - I think it was a reaction to blueberries yet I can eat them on their own.
I'm sure there are healthy and inexpensive recipes out there. I gave up after a few months as I felt it was too much work and a waste of fruit as I was using more in one smoothie than I would eat over a few days.Single woman doing it on my own... First house bought June 2021!

I wouldn't bother buying a blender just for smoothies. But once you've got a blender there are other things you can use it for. I use mine for soup mainly.
I make a smoothie if I've got a glut of fruit, usually if I have over-ripe bananas. You can then add juice, or milk or natural yogurt, or anything else that comes to hand. You don't need to follow a recipe - if you just put healthy ingredients in to it, then it will be healthy. No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0 -
I use a hand blender.
Scoop of oats, banana, top with milk and blitz.
Sometimes I add strawberries too!Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.0 -
Often expensive, often full of sugar. Always consider calories and sugar levels before incorporating into everyday diet. Also think of your teeth (as suggested by my dentist). I guess the occasional one can be nice.
For me, it's water, good for you and free. A squeeze of fresh lemon and ice if wanted. Excellent!!0 -
I have a Nutribullet and make a smoothie most days for breakfast - usually with a banana, a handful of frozen fruit (blackberries, cherries, strawberries etc), a handful of kale and some protein powder. I think it's about 270 calories, and it keeps me full until lunchtime. I don't really eat fruit the rest of the day, so I don't worry about it being too much sugar.0

+ for a hand blender & not a custom bit of smoothie kit.
In the recent heat, I think a smoothie can a welcome alternative to cooking a meal, like a bowl of soup in winter, but I'd hesitate to think "splendid - healthy & money saving" when it can so easily be neither.
Much better to make your own than buy them though!0 -
According to the government guidelines no matter how many portions of different fruit/veg you put in the smoothies. It only counts as a max of 2 towards your 5 a day.

Fruit is better for you eaten as the fruit rather than blended as you benefit from the fibre when eating a whole fruit.Thrifty Till 50 Then Spend Till the End

I have read this in an article on the Internet but surely once you eat a whole fruit it disintegrates into mush in your stomach so what's the difference?0 -
You can make smoothies with fruit or vegetables or whatever you want really.
You can get very creative.
I wouldn't buy a specific bit of kit to do it. I have a hand blender which I use for lots of things, smoothies being just one of them.Things that are differerent: draw & drawer, brought & bought, loose & lose, dose & does, payed & paid0
