I’m going to call on Monday but I missed a couple months council tax - I’m am £90 a month. I made a payment today but got a letter saying I now owe £711?
It’s to debt collection?
Let’s say as a maximum I’ve missed £270. How on earth do I owe over £700?
I know I can get charged for this for not that’s much?
Do I now have to pay the agency or the council?

Isn't there something about paying monthly is at their discretion so they can demand full year if payments are missed?0

This is correct, if you fail to make your monthly payments, you lose the right to pay your bill by installments, and then the full bill becomes due.
You had better contact them first thing monday morning, as the next step maybe a liability order, and Mr bailiff turning up on your doorstep.
I would assume collections will accept a payment plan from you.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards. Which letter is it ? A reminder, final notice, summons or liability order (it makes a big difference as to what happens next).I made a payment today but got a letter saying I now owe £711?I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. A warning say that a liability order will be made. Can I not make card payments to the council?0

As said, give them a ring first thing Monday.
They do take away your right to pay monthly if payments are missed but are usually happy to arrange a new payment plan if you contact them. I've had them extend my payment terms to the full 12 months as opposed to the usual 10 after a quick phone call (after my right to pay monthly was revoked)
They were also happy to discuss a payment plan after I received a letter saying that it was now in the hands of debt collectors. They called them off straight away and we sorted it together.0 -
You want to get a payment plan in place before they get a liability order which means extra fees of £50 or whatever it is these days being added on top.0

Sounds like you mean the summons.
You can pay whatever you like to the council but unless they are willing to accept a payment arrangement - some will, on the basis they have the protection of the liability order - they are under no obligation to cease action unless full payment + costs is made.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals.
