Washing woolen socks OS

My son has a pair of warm thermal woolen socks and I don't know how to wash them without shrinking them. I am looking for some OS ways because they are cheaper and easier.

I would dissolve a bit of powder in a sink of cool water...not too hot, or they may shrink.
Gently agitate them, being careful not to rub them too vigorously (sp).
A couple of rinses in very cool clean water, then gently squeeze them to get the moisture out.
May be an idea to squeeze them in a dry towel....be careful what colour, as the socks may bleed colour and you could end up with a mottled towel.
Dry away from direct heat, so not a good idea to put over a radiator...unless the heating has gone off and the radiator is cooling down....you may want to gently stretch them as they dry..

Have fun..in a few weeks, you will be bunging them in the washer with everything else....
