Do you need to go to a Russell group university to get a good job

Options
I went to a non-Russell group but want a job in banking, I know I won’t get onto a graduate scheme or been able to get on a graduate scheme.

  • No you don't.
Things that are differerent: draw & drawer, brought & bought, loose & lose, dose & does, payed & paid

  • I'm sure you will get loads of lovely helpful replies on the 2 lines just wrote.

The last time I was asked for my 20 years+ GCSE marks was by a fairly snotty recuitment consultant; it was for an immediate interview with a pension company who wanted to pay around £15k couple of months back...

    Make your own mind up.
  • There's not necessarily any reason why you won't. It's as much about ability and how you come across and express yourself as to where you got your degree from - although degrees in what are perceived as "harder" subjects are probably looked upon more favourably.

Mistakes many applicants make are not checking their grammar and spelling, and not making sure that what they write makes sense.

Multiple choice question for you: If you know you won't get onto a graduate scheme, why did you apply to a graduate scheme?

Answer 1: You know you don't meet the criteria, but want to apply anyway to prove the system is biased against you.
Answer 2: You don't know whether you will get onto a graduate scheme, but are assuming you will not because this is easier than figuring out whether or not you meet the criteria, or doing something to ensure you do meet the criteria?

Not every graduate entry scheme in finance requires that your attended a Russell-group University. e.g. Co-op Bank does not.

Basically, you need to apply yourself to getting the job you want.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

If you start with such a negative outlook, it will be a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Curiously I am about to start a new job tomorrow and it is the first time I have seen the requirement for a Russell Group uni.

(Apparently the name comes from the organisers holding meetings at the Russell Hotel, in London!)

I worked for Halifax and didn't go to any university. The majority didn't. Most started as counter staff, one is now branch manager. They paid for CMAP courses if you showed enough drive etc.
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....

Did you just "go" or did you actually get a degree ? If so what ?
