the ombudsman is not your friend - its there for the status quo of the industry rather than a consumer champion.so do your utmost with barclays and get it as high as you can. not saying don't go - you may have to, just don;t invest too much in a result
I think you're right in terms of trying to settle it with barclays first, it all depends on the level of compensation they are willing to move to.0 -

I used to work in complaints management for a bank and we would generally offer up to £500 as cheaper then going to ombudsman.
Interesting, thanks for that good to know the wiggle room. I guess they have a minimum level they will start at and £150 for a little bit of bad service would suffice in normal circumstances, but there is more to my case i feel.0 -
£150 is probably about 4 times what Optima make on a Barclays case, sounds pretty good to me on that level.
yeah i guess its a profit by number game for them, like a little factory but with no quality control or limits to how many cases they take on and a complete disregard for the service level.
Although my complaint is currently sitting with barclays so they will be the ones paying. I do also have a complaint in directly with optima.0 -

I would probably fight for the indemnity money back as well. If they were quicker to tell you, you would have had the chance to review your options and see if another lender would do without
Good point, my previous provider nationwide did not require this. But barclays did, or rather optima pushed it on them, and when are a bank going to refuse extra protection for themselves if the customer is paying, it is a little one sided and unfair. Time was against me as each day passed by the interest was mounting, so felt pressured to just get it all sorted. Again another lesson learned to probably leave a good 3-4 months of slippage on remortgages.0 -
Thanks to all your useful help and comments, i have send a reply back to Barclays saying that £150 is not a reasonable offer and have been a bit more exact with all the total costs, or at least the ones where i feel where avoidable if the process had been handled properly.
I really appreciate all your comments and advice, and im glad that others do agree about whats appropriate and not just me being greedy.0 -
I had a similar scenario with Halifax.
I did everything I was asked of in a timely manner, but their whole back office and legals were an absolute shambles trying to sort out a simple remortgage.
I noted every phone call, email etc and logged the times sent. After it all went pear shaped I listed my losses, point by point, to Halifax who considered it for a bit, but in all fairness, they did eventually refund me the whole amount.
If you believe it's not your fault, FIGHT !0
