My husband's underpants and socks get thrown in the machine with his t-shirts and the lot gets washed at 30. I use non-bio powder as bio brings both of us up in a rash.

My own bras and knickers I hand-wash, as they are a tad lacy and the bras are underwired, so I don't want to risk them in the machine (I spent £150 on 6 bras and 12 pairs of knickers just a few months ago, so they're all fairly new, too).

I wash nearly everything at 30.
Underwear goes in with similar colours.

The exception is whites or something that's quite dirty which will get washed using a higher temperature.
  • I wash everything at 30degrees. I use a cap full of Dettol antibacterial laundry cleaner as my husband works in a healthcare environment. The only separation is darks and lights, then towels have a separate wash. Never had any laundry related problems. I use one Smol capsule per load (up to 7kg). My laundry is always clean and smells pleasant. The only time I’ve ever used a higher temperature was when I had nappies to wash which went in on a 60deg eco wash.

Should add that this includes washable sanitary towels. 30degrees is fine.

My undies always go in at 90. They have their own separate laundry basket and are always one load into themselves. This is because I suffer with certain problems and was advised by a doctor to wash my underwear on the hottest wash my machine was capable of. My underwear isn’t delicate or lacy (plain cotton/Lycra with no trims etc) so it stands up fine to repeated hot washes.
Bras and socks just go on standard washes- unless I’ve got athletes foot which I get on occasion then socks are kept separate and again washed at 90.

  • I separate colours and whites (meaning whites and light colours that do not run).

I wash colours at 30 and whites at 40, mainly because that includes my OH's badminton kit.

That is all the separation I do, although I do make sure my bras go in the 30 degree wash or they deteriorate too quickly.
