Employee and self employed in the same year

Hello,
I need help regarding self assessment for 2018/2019 I was employee till September 2018 and became self employed since then. Got the Utr number but didn't pay tax and National Insurance as we had a baby, moved house, renovation was going on etc. No time, no sleep you know how it is.
So I just got an email from Hmrc that I have time till 31st of July to file a report. I was thinking I still have time till January. The email states that they own me money from tax. I guess that's from my work as a employee till September.
Do I need to file self assessment now?
Please tell me where to start to avoid penalty?
Thank you.

For self assessment you have until end of January of the following year, so 31st January 2020 for the 18/19 tax year.

The only end of July deadline I know of is for payments on account.

Are you sure it's a genuine email?

Do you have your log in details for the HMRC website? If so log in that way and see what it is saying about your deadlines.

Are you sure the e-mail is legit?

The only 31 July time limit is for tax credits. Have you returned forms for that. Your tax credits will stop if you don't.

We don't get tax credits so you are right the email may be fraud. Thank you so much for telling me.
So If I want to pay the National Insurance and tax from September 2018 till April 2019 can do it now when I file a Self Assessment?
