Using a word instead of link

Apart from me, all other forum members seem to know how to insert a word which you can click on instead of using the full URL.
I know you can use the small blue circular icon which gives a link, but when I type in a URL, and go to preview, all I see is the URL in duplicate, along with some coding!
Using Chrome, what am I doing wrong?

Are you looking in the Preview box or in the Reply to Thread box, which is after the Preview box?
Also, what happens when you post the link - does it work or not?
1. I click on the little blue icon with what looks like a paperclip at the bottom (If I just want this to be a single word rather than showing the url, I type the word in first then highlight it before clicking on the blue icon)
2. I paste the link into the popup box and click Ok
3. Then it inserts this into my message - you can see the coding in the Edit Post box, but the link displays correctly in the Preview box (i.e. highlighted in blue)

Thanks for replying.
When using the small blue icon, (upper left, at top) when using Preview Post, I get

Going to try it way you suggested

It works!
Thanks very much LizB62, I hadn't realised you need to state the word, and highlight before using the little blue icon.
Much appreciated.0 -
0) Copy the URL
1) Type the words and highlight
2) Click on linky button
3) Paste URL (make sure you dont get double "https:")
4) Click on OK

Thanks very much One-Eye, it worked.
Thanks everyone for being so helpful, much appreciated.0 -
As a personal opinion please can i add that I much prefer to see the link rather than a word (other than when the link is too long to work). primarily as i like to know where I'm going
This is especially true when the word is something like 'click here' so doesn't even show website or when they can hide identifiers or referrals - often unintentionally
I realise that most are genuine links it's just my preference0 -

The Word(s) I, and most others, use are the name of the site.
I put this on the first line of my post so that if someone hovers the cursor over the post title on the directory, they can see which site the post relates to before they actually click in to it.
How to do a clicky is explained in the Comping Guide, there is even a video if the explanation is confusing.
The Comping Guide also includes loads of other useful info that many people, especially newbies, seem totally unaware of. It's a shame this guide is now hidden away in other posts rather than being a sticky in it's own right at the top of the Board.0
