    Hi there

Could anyone please help me with ideas of what to do with a lot of Blackberries?

I must admit - I am afraid, I am not a fantastic cook. I can make most meals, but baking, as in cakes etc - I have never learned

So any ideas, would need to be fairly simple to start - but I am prepared to learn

    Many thanks x

Rather than waste the blackberries, you could buy ready made crumble mixture.

Also, you can eat them raw or lightly stewed (or defrosted) with cream or Greek yogurt if you want the healthier option.

No need to be buying pudding or fresh fruit when yo can get it for free.:)

Crab apples are incredibly sour/tart that's probably why you were told not to eat them as a child- but they are great for jam / jelly making.

blackberry & apple pie. If you are not a great cook buy ready made short crust pastry for starters- if you like the result then learn to make it!
(You could also buy puff pastry but I prefer the other kind)

Mix blackberries with other berries such as raspberries to extend quantities.

    In fruit salad

    In a red jelly

Another vote for blackberry whisky. Makes a great alcholic tipple (no flavour of whisky) plus you can use the left over berries with yoghurt or in pies etc so now you have drunken b&a crumble :rotfl:

My garden was covered in bramble when I moved in. I didn’t attack it until it had fruited. I ended up with about 8 kilos. Took about 3 years to clear the freezer shelf! Stewed blackberries, blackberry and apple crumble, blackberry and apple pie ...

Have you got blackberries already? in Essex ours are far from ready.

I always pick what I can and freeze them - in wet and cold February in a crumble they are a lovely memory of the summer gone

Wonder if this will work with gin...? Like sloes...

A quick Google suggests it will.

Blackberry vodka as well, so I'm told.

There are also blackberry bars which I quite like with my lunches and which freeze quite well:

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • Yes, crab apples will give a nasty stomach ache if you eat them raw (not life-threatening, just unpleasant!) but are lovely to make jellies (especially herb jellies) and jams.
there are a lot of recipes archived on here and maybe someone can point you at how to find them. BBC Good Food is a great on-line resource for recipes.

The only reason (I think) that blackberry whisky was suggested is that this is the one fruit drink where you can use whisky.

It's very easy to find recipes that use vodka or white rum or even gin but whisky has such a strong flavour which usually remains and overpowers the fruit taste.

Probably I should not suggest this to a whisky or even whiskey expert- but I had a glut of it!!
