At Least !!!!!! Turpin Wore A Mask!!!!!!

I went over my £100 overdraft limit by£121.46with Lloyds tsb in the beginning of November.
This was due to, I admit me not being careful with payments, and not having enough to cover direct debits. So as it advised on the letter you get, I contacted them for help. After three weeks and four phone calls I finally got someone to listen to me from the collections department. I was told they would be charging me on a daily basis of £20 interest and this would amount to £380 on my January statement.   I can ring them then to arrange a payment plan. I got £750 from them in the beggining of the year as a goodwill payment after asking for my bank charges back, I wonder if they are holding that against me, as the person i spoke to said they will moniter my account for further abuse for a year. I did open a parachute account at the time of reclaiming with Barclays but they said I wont get a debit card for two years with them. I work long hours and its difficult without one.

  • Argh!!!!! That is a real "daylight robbery" as My Mum would call it.
Why have barclays told you, you wont have a debit card for 2 years. If you fund this with regular payments they would surely look at giving you a debit card. If not why not try for a Halifax Easycash account with Electron Debit Card. Or maybe a Nat West Step account with a Solo debit card these are basic accounts and can be opened on-line. You could then arrange a payment plan with your current bank re the charges.
    Good Luck

    Something doesn't add up here.

An overdraft of £221.46 (£100 overdraft limit and going over by £121.46 as per the OP) would not incur interest of £380 on a January statement. Are these charges (not interest) or are there other monies owing Lloyds as well?)

  • Can I break your posting down to two elements.
Firstly YOU went over YOUR agreed overdraft by more than 100%
Why don't you look at the charges leaflet sent to you in October which will explain how the new charging regime works.
Have you signed up for the text alerts? (they text you when you are within £50 of your limit and again on the day the excess happens to give you a chance to pay in and avoid the fees)

It is not clear from you posting whether you actually paid anything in to bring your account back to order.

The second element of my posting is that you mention Collections - within 3 weeks of this happening.
They do not get involved that soon unless the bank thinks you are a runaway spender.
So is this the first time it has happened or have you had previous problems with the running of your account? (Notwithstanding your claim for £750!)

It seems to me that you have not learnt anything from past misdemeanours - now you will have to pay.The fact that you have had a refund of charges in the past means nothing but the banks are now much stricter when giving refunds.
Basically if it is a bank error then you will get them back if not you won't.

Yes I hold my hands up to all you say not being very careful with direct debits, have been struggling with debt payments for a while. I think I have to sit down and do another income and expenditure as I now dont have enough money coming in to whats going out. I only owe £4000 odd, I started my debt recovery 5 years ago owing £15000 its been 5 years of living on next to nothing, I work part time, as I'm a carer for my grown up son with severe mental health problems I earn over the limit for carers allowance cant remember when I last went out, had a holiday, or bought anything new, but it was me who got into the mess and me who will get out of it, not looking for sympathy just needed to talk to someone, not to be judged. Sorry I bothered some people on this thread, but thank you to those who listened.

We all listen, but if you just want us to say "Oh dear never mind", you are in the wrong place.
Do you want practical help? If so, don't slag off those who offer advice.

Jinny - I will offer sympathy. The charge is grossly disproportionate to your crime, regardless of T&C's, but unfortunately, that's Banks for you. You have my full admiration, working, caring with your son, facing up to past mistakes, and yet, because you are doing the right thing, neither the State nor Financial Institutions will offer you any help.
If I was you, I would write to Lloyds, explain the full circumstances, you never know, there might just be somebody there willing to be sympathetic.
    Good luck.
