I've broken my sewing maching

I have lost the manual too - what a wally !
Right... I have found spare needles :j they are 11/80 and 14/90 and 16/100
The one I took out was a 14/90 (whatever that means, I presume size) The next one up in the pack looks slightly bigger - Its a 16/100 - I am wondering if this would be better for thicker fabric like canvas ?
There are other 'feet' in the sewing machine box but this is beyond my current remit :rotfl:0 -
Yep, try the 16/100, that's a bigger one than the 14/90.
What make is your sewing machine? You may be able to get a replacement manual or download one from the Net.
Tooties, there was a website posted on here with a free and easy bag to make, I'll see if I can find it for you.... TaDa!!

Thanks again
I will try the bigger one.
Its a Singer - I will have a look at the Singer website later then - thanks, you''ve been a huge help !!! I might even get my bag finished today now
Honestly, what would we do without the internet and the wonderful people on these forums ?!!!0 -
You're very welcome
I'm always pleased to [STRIKE]bully[/STRIKE] encourage someone else to sew, my favourite pastime :j
Let me know if I can help further, good luck with the bags.

I'm not sure if its related but now the bobbin won't take up (if that makes sense).
I have threaded everything up but the bobbin cotton isn't coming through. I have always lacked the 'nack' of doing that well, but this time, try as I might it isn't working
Any clues ?0 -
OK, well firstly be sure that you have the bobbin round the right way in the case (sorry if I sound patronising, I don't mean to be but you really have to start from the beginning when there are problems). I haven't used a Singer machine for years but in my machine, you have to make sure there's a long enough tail for the needle to 'grab' it and pull it through. Is the bobbin case moving freely?
To make the needle take up the thread, hold onto the needle thread at the back of the needle (clamp your left hand onto the tail) and slowly turn the handwheel towards you one rotation. The needle should dip slowly down and pull the bobbin thread back up with it. Can you see whether the bobbin is shuttling OK in its case?
Also check that your needle is securely seated in its holder, if you have changed it for a larger one then it will need more 'space' to hold it firmly, try taking it back out and putting it back in again.
Good luck, I hope you get it sorted out.

Another thought: I know that Singer needles are different from the ordinary ones I use, are you sure you have the new needle in the right way round?0 -
You might still have some cotton stuck in the bobbin case.
If you feel competent enough, slid the back plate out, lift out the bobbin, turn the hand wheel ans watch the bobbin case go round, you may see there are some threads caught there, use a pair of tweezers to gently extract them.
When you rethread the machine, don't forget to draw the thread up from the bobbin case before you start to sew, then put the material under the foot, lower the presser foot lever then by hand use the wheel to stab the needle into the fabric to start the first stich. If the fabric is too thick to sew successfully, you may need to sew the bags by hand
Never use a bent needle, it will cause all sorts of problems0 -
Hi Frugal I know it sounds daft but is the needle in the right way round??
I'm always doing thisthere should be either a groove which shows the front of it or one of the sides at the top will be flat..on some of the older singers they go in ok whichever way you put them but they just won't sew

Oh flaming heck ! That gets me every single time - I always turn it away from me. Honestly, you would think I would have got it by now
Don't worry about patronizing me ! I have no clue where sewing machines are concerned - I am not even sure mine is threaded up correctly :rotfl:0 -
Perhaps before you go any further do a google search, threading singer sewing machine, there seems to be lots of info. would halp if you knew the machine model0
