Career advice

Hi guys,

So I am just after some career advice. I have asked Family and friends, but I don’t know where else to ask.

I have been working in customer service for the last 8 years. The past year I haven’t really been enjoying it. So I have done the right thing and left. I start a new job, at a warehouse next week. So it will be a complete change to what I am used to.

I have taken a £4 an hour pay cut, but hopefully I will enjoy it more.
I have learnt that it isn’t all about money, you need to enjoy life. But money does help.

I feel as though this job is a stepping stone, and I do need to look for another job, but if I REALLY enjoy this job, then maybe I don’t.
My dad mentioned about doing an apprenticeship. He mentioned plastering. My friend who has his own plastering company said forget about doing an apprenticeship in plastering and go on an intensive plastering course. My worry is, am I guaranteed a job after? I would also want security.

I have a passion for photography, but I still have a lot to learn.
I do look daily on the job websites, but nothing catches my eye, just seems to be bar work, or retail, or jobs I am not qualified to do.
If there was an apprenticeship course, for say 2 years, and at the end I was guaranteed a job and a pay I would be happy with, I would 100% do it. But who can answer those questions? I just don’t know where to start.

I just feel like I am failing, but I know I am not. It is normal to be lost in life and not sure what to do at this age. I also feel like in this day and age it’s not what you know, it’s who you know.

I am willing to pay to be trained in something new but I just don’t know what

Any advice really would be appreciated.

Thanks

If you're considering a career in construction, this site is as good a starting point as any:

The 'Routes Into Construction' tab includes details of courses and apprenticeships so you can weigh up the options.

Did your plasterer friend inform you how physically demanding plastering can be?

There is never any guarantee of a job after or security. The construction industry is renowned for its peaks and troughs.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

The RAF are recruiting for photographers at the moment, amongst other roles.

Why have you posted yet another thread on this.

It's best to stick to one thread so that people don't waste their time replying twice.

No jobs are guaranteed and most plasterers are self-employed and a guarantee of work does not come with that. Having said that, anyone with a trade (plumber, plasterer, carpenter, bathroom fitter etc) has as much work as they want if they are good at what they do.

Apprenticeships might be one of the easiest way to get new skills but it means working for peanuts wage wise for a year, since you'd be doing well to get anywhere near over £5 an hour sometimes (though I do remember one I saw a while back which was an apprenticeship which was paying £13k in its first year!)

Consider self study as well, various online courses all for free available. All smartphones (I presume you have one) have cameras on them, of varying quality depending on the purchase price. You can hone your photography skills with that at no charge to yourself beyond charging the device up.
