Yup, still darn them with my grandmothers “mushroom”. Hubby wears black cotton sports type socks for work and sometimes a little hole develops at the heel.
A quick darn pretty much doubles the life span of the socks and like someone else said I find it quite a therapeutic task.

Just noticed the comment about darning sweaters - I also do that. In winter hubby sometimes wears the big “fisherman” type sweaters. Many a hole I’ve mended where he has been carelessly welding. I’ve also added leather elbow patches to a few.

A seconder for crochet socks pattern. Crochet is my only domestic skill but it’s practical limitations are considerable.

I don’t darn socks as It makes them too uncomfortable to wear. I’d darn other types of clothing but only if I though they were worth it (not just in terms of time spent on the darn but it can be a major faff to match the colour and texture).

Just realised I lied above - I can sew/darn as well as crochet, but mainly can’t be bothered to do so.

Another one here who darns socks with a wooden mushroom. Mr OH is very particular about his socks and doesn't part with them easily. However, I only darn the toes. Any socks worn out at the heels or underneath are immediately relegated to the charity shop rag bag.

I enjoy darning, so I darn them when I have time! OH seems to put holes through them all all at once though, which is annoying.

I have a eanding bag which I put stuff in for repair if the item is in a reasonable condition ,otherwise it may end up in my 'rag' bag which is for cleaning cloths. I have a couple of favorite tee shirts that I have sewn an embroidered motif on if there is perhaps a unforseen stain that I can't get rid of, and it has 'set' into the material.

A small animal motif from my local sewing shop, or if I find them in my travels in a market can perhaps cost less than a pound and if its to go onto a tee shirt that I like it's well worth it. I have even removed it before consigning the garment to the rag bag once its worn out Why bin perfectly good serviceable clothes, there is more than enough rubbish in landfill. But then I don't mind mending and find it quite restful on a winter's night snuggled up on the sofa with my sewing box. I normally do my DGS mending as well as my Dd hates sewing and the boys school trouser seams are sewn with very poor thread and usually caom adrift after several washes but Granny's strong black thread soon sorts it out.

Yes, darning holes and mending, usually that bit at the junction near the ankle where the heel turns which is often badly joined and gets holes in them (bamboo ones particularly.

    Hi,

I have made slight adaptions to my own fit but it's based on a free pattern called The Survival Sock.

I don't like the ribbing so just make the leg longer and do a very short 4 or 5 stitch ribbing.

Feel free to pm me if you need help .

    I darn the wool socks.
The black school socks bought by the kilo are worn til they start showing skin & then binned. Youngest happily opines “life is too short to match socks” & wears non-matching socks for the entertainment of seeing us splutter...
