Legality of temporary dwelling living?

Have often daydreamed about the prospect of living in a caravan or similar temporary dwelling on a bit of land bought outright like a cabin rather than spending decades paying the bank back for a mortgage. I was shocked to discover that this is illegal in the UK and you'd need planning permission for pretty much anything.
About the closest legal option I can seem to find is buying some land and opening a caravan club site on the land - but there's no guarantee of approval and it's also unclear whether your own caravan would be counted towards the limit (5 caravans or motorhomes, 10 tents). Not to mention you'd have to spend more on the land in order to make enough to live on by being somewhere more prominent/popular and providing more amenities -decreasing your income opportunity. The income presumably is pretty meagre as well given the limitations.
It also seems unlikely you'd get a mortgage or bank loan for land intended for such purposes as they'd consider you hippies for even trying it. Severely limiting the amount of land you can buy in the assumption you'd use what you've got towards a deposit for the purposes.
Short of joining a commune what are the options for someone who wants to go down the "live the least impactful life" option.
