Worms in supermarket vacuum packed Fish: probably very common

When I was a kid, my parents used to cook everything well-done.
I became a bit more sophisticated with rare meats and sushi, but I realised this lunchtime that I was forgetting a few important things when I discovered a live worm coiled up on my vacuum or gas pre-packed fresh cod fillets
It was exactly like this one in an article a couple of years ago in the Independent except not from Sainsbury's but another major supermarket ...

The picture on a normal laptop probably displays at about 2x magnification ...
I am eating the fish nevertheless because I like fish, but it was a reminder that I ought to be careful about cooking fresh fish carefully and properly :search:

Meat is known to host all kinds of parasites: just because you can't see it, it doesn't mean its not there
Solution for the squeamish: don't eat it. Or don't think about it!Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

By the way, although I cooked and ate the fish, and I do swat mosquitos which I can't otherwise control, I have no grudge against the worm and can control it, so for now I have kept him/her (or maybe it's both?) sealed up in the fridge so I can show it to any who are interested0 -
It's a cod worm - quite common.
If you regularly buy 'fresh' fish from the supermarket you might be interested in watching this program from a few weeks ago that mentions (and shows) these worms and has quite a large section on how 'fresh' your supermarket fish really is (or isn't).

You might find yourself switching to frozen fish after watching it.....0 -
When I used to go sea fishing almost all fish had those white worms in their gut when opened up. Especially flounder and plaice.0

That's what you get for buying British caught cod, you want alaskan or Icelandic, because the colder water prevents or rather massively decreases the presence of worms0

I've done exactly that0 -
Suppose if they were placed in the freezer for a day or so, that would kill the worms?
Not a pleasant thought though0
